Instructions for Using
The ‘Straight 8’ Scoring System By Kevin Hewitt CVPPA Score Keeper By following these easy, step-by-step instructions, you will be able to complete the Score Sheet. How handicapping works To compute each player's average. If Susan
scored 8 pts, 5pts, 7pts, 5pts, and 7pts in her games during week one (total = 32). You take her total points and divide by
the number of games played. In this case it would be 32 divided by 5 or average of 6 (a minimum average of 3 will be used
if a player has a lower average.) Players'
averages are used to compute an overall Team Handicap. The first time Team Handicaps are applied is after you finish your
first week of play. A team with
a stronger Total Average (a higher handicap) "gives" the weaker team (lower handicap) points. You subtract the higher team handicap form the lower team handicap.
The difference is then added to the lower handicap total under handicap. Ie: Team A Handicap is 45
Team B 36 Each round Team
A is giving Team B (45-36) 9 points. For a total of 45 points. Note in this system there will be ties and that is scored as
a half win for both teams.

Does Anybody Really Know
What Time it is? By
Dennis Biss CVPPA
President, 2007-08 At our
last Board Meeting, Oct 7, 2007, which we held at Robbie T’s, we accomplished the following items: 1. Got
through the reading of last meeting’s minutes in record time. 2. Approved By-Laws for which the CVPPA
can now officially operate by. 3. Reviewed the NEW Score Sheet 4. Instituted Floating Substitutions 5.
Adopted the “Straight 8” Scoring and Handicap system to be used
for the rest of the Season. I
thank those Team Captains that did attend the meeting last Sunday night for coming. Of great importance was the approval of our
Association’s By-Laws and Policies. We need them to actually proceed with our Incorporation and NPO
status.
As many of you know, there
was an error on the Score Sheet last week. It was the positioning of the Home Team Breaks which needed
to be moved to the 3-A and 5-D matches. Also, many complained that the printing was too small to read.
I agree! Don’t fret on these issues, as I have completely revised the Score Sheet form and
believe that it now will work for everyone. Included in this week’s packets are some sheets to use
while we are re-printing the 3 part forms. Please
note that corrections to the top (White) sheet of the form MAY NOT be clear on the second and third sheets. Try
to be accurate with your posting of scores and other important information. The board reviewed a motion to allow ‘Floating Subs’ in our league. It was discussed
that it would only be fair to allow this if; a. The Substitute were a CVPPA member in good standing. Ie: they paid their $10 CVPPA League
fee. b. The
Substitute would NOT be eligible for any Prize Funds, including special events. c. They would NOT have to pay the BCA League
fee if they did not plan on playing more than 8 weeks or play in any sanctioned BCA event. We reviewed the 15/75 scoring system and by a Majority Vote, elected
to utilize the ‘Straight 8’ system instead. Due to the misconceptions and understanding of
this system and the handicapping, it was felt that a simpler ‘make 8 get 8’ approach was needed. Handicapping
will basically remain the same as in the past, it’s a simple ‘# of Pts divided by # of games played.
Kevin will explain the scoring method in more detail in this newsletter. I hope that the next few weeks go a little bit smoother than this first one….. Good Shooting Everyone! ..db..

| Sometimes
it seems there is no way to get position on another ball. Learning to come off of the rail to cut in a ball can increase
the number of ways you can gain position. To learn the shot, measure the distance from the middle of the object ball
to the cushion. Now take that distance and apply it from the rail. Point "x" is your aiming spot.
The cue ball will hit the rail above your aiming spot, just stroke to the spot you just measured and the ball will go in the
hole. Experiment with position by adding spin to the cue. |
